Open Mat -  Traditionally we would refer to Open Mat as San Shou Meaning Free Hand / Free Style, early forms of mixing Martial Arts. In China,  Mongolian Wrestling, Folk Wrestling, Tai Chi and Kung Fu Styles all share the idea of SanShou and apply certain rule sets for practice.  Wrestling and Tai Chi share a Clinch, Sweep and Throw rule set, Points are mostly scored for remaining standing or landing on top off or falling over or out of the ring / square.

Tai Chi San Shou includes any stand up fighting and soft / hard sparring with no gloves, Wing Chun shares this method calling it Sticky Hands (Chi Sau). Lei Tai is San Shou on a raised platform where falling is a risk. SanDa is the most modern version applying kick boxing rules, strikes clinching and throws, The difference between SanDa and Thai Boxing is in SanDa Competition Knees and Elbows are not allowed although Knee and Elbow Strikes are common in all the Styles. Most styles share History with Shaolin, Many Shaolin and Tai Chi Students compete in Wu Shu Competition performing Forms or SanDa, Sanctioned (With Rules) Full Contact Fights. Some have become MMA Fighters.

Tai Chi Push Hands also has a Style of Competition with limited Stance and Footwork, called on the spot Push Hands, this version is the most common in the West. Grappling now mostly refers to on Ground Fighting, BJJ is a good example of on the Ground Fighting. Bruce Lee coined the term JKD for his own method of Training, Kung Fu with other Styles of Striking, Grappling and Modern Training Equipment. MMA is the most modern term for mixing multi styles to applied to a competition with MMA Gloves and fought in a Cage. MMA is also trained for Self Defence.

Here at MAUK we encourage an Open Mind towards other Martial Artists. We are grateful for experience gained training with many great Martial Arts Instructors and include various aspects of their teaching in our own Sessions. Although we have learned from many Professional Fight Coaches,  we train at an amateur level for Self Defence
